An everything shower routine is an occasional chance to group a few grooming tasks, not a requirement to use every body-care product you own. Start with comfortable warm water, gentle cleansing, a thorough rinse, and moisturizer afterward. Choose the extra jobs before you get in.
Hair washing, body exfoliation, shaving, and richer moisture can all belong in a reset, but none has to happen every time. The point is to leave with a routine you chose, not a checklist you felt obliged to finish.
First, decide which reset jobs you actually need
Ask what would make this shower useful today. Pick one or two additions to the basic shower, and let the rest wait. If all you need is the ordinary step-by-step sequence, use our everyday Shower Routine guide.
| Keep the foundation | Choose if useful | Leave out or separate |
|---|---|---|
| Warm water, cleansing where needed, a good rinse, and post-shower moisture | Hair wash, one gentle exfoliation method, shaving, or a richer moisturizer on dry areas | Repeated scrubbing, several exfoliants on one area, or uncomfortable steps over already irritated skin |
Before the shower: build your personal checklist

- Hair-wash day? Set out your usual shampoo and conditioner; follow their individual directions rather than adding an unnecessary hair treatment.
- Want to exfoliate? Consider whether this area actually needs it and whether it feels comfortable today. Doing nothing is a valid choice.
- Planning to shave? Have a suitable shaving cream or gel and a clean, sharp razor ready. Shaving can be a separate job from exfoliating.
- Need more moisture? Place one comfortable moisturizer near your towel. Choose a richer texture for drier areas only if it helps.
If your skin is raw, sunburned, cracked, or unusually stingy, change the plan to a gentler wash and skip optional friction. You do not have to earn the relaxing part of a shower by adding treatments.
In the shower: give each chosen step a sensible place
- Use comfortably warm water. Very hot water is a poor tradeoff when it leaves your skin feeling tight.
- Wash and condition your hair if it is a wash day, following product directions.
- Gently cleanse body areas where sweat, odor, sunscreen, or buildup makes it useful.
- If you chose to exfoliate, use one suitable method with gentle pressure and rinse it away as directed.
- If you chose to shave, do it toward the end, after skin and hair have been wet, using shaving cream or gel.
- Rinse off body cleanser, hair-product residue, scrub, and shaving product thoroughly.
A longer ritual does not require staying under running water the whole time. For dry skin, the American Academy of Dermatology advises warm water, showers of about five to ten minutes, gentle cleansing, and moisturizer on damp skin. Its dry-skin bathing guidance is especially useful if your skin feels uncomfortable after long showers.
Keep exfoliation and shaving optional, not a matching set

A body scrub, exfoliating tool, and acid product are not three required stages of an everything shower. Exfoliation is not for everyone; method and frequency depend on your skin and what else you use. The AAD’s at-home exfoliation advice calls for gentle technique and says not to exfoliate over open cuts, wounds, or sunburn.
Shaving does not require scrubbing immediately beforehand. If you shave, the AAD advises wetting the skin and hair first, applying shaving cream or gel, moving the razor in the direction of growth, and rinsing between passes. See its shaving technique guide. If combining shaving and exfoliation on the same area leaves it sore, put them on separate days rather than pushing through.
After the shower: finish with one useful moisture step
Pat dry with a soft towel, leaving the skin slightly damp. Apply your moisturizer soon afterward, particularly where you tend to feel dry or tight. A lighter lotion may be enough; a richer cream may feel better on drier areas. You do not automatically need to stack lotion, butter, oil, and another treatment.
For the wider question of how cleansers, lotions, creams, and body oils fit together, see the Body Care guide. This page is about planning the occasional session, not building a new product collection.
Save this before, during, and after checklist
| When | Do this | Optional job to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Before | Choose the purpose; set out towel and moisturizer. | Hair wash, exfoliation, shave, or richer moisture. |
| During | Use warm water; gently cleanse; rinse thoroughly. | Do the selected extra only if skin feels comfortable. |
| Near the end | Finish rinsing. | Shave with suitable lubrication if desired. |
| After | Pat dry; moisturize while slightly damp. | Use a richer texture only on areas that need it. |
If you only complete the foundation, it is still a complete shower. A reset can mean a hair-wash day without a scrub, or a moisturizing finish without shaving.
How often should an everything shower happen?
There is no universal everything-shower timetable. Group tasks when doing so is convenient, but follow each product’s directions and how your skin responds. Exfoliation and shaving do not need to follow the same schedule, and neither needs to happen just because it is your designated reset day.
When the routine starts to feel like too much
If an area becomes increasingly dry, red, sore, or stingy, stop the optional step that may be aggravating it. For that session, avoid scrub tools and strong leave-on exfoliants on the uncomfortable area. Return to gentle cleansing, a good rinse, and a moisturizer you tolerate. For wider routine overload, our Skin Barrier Mistakes guide explores habits worth reconsidering.
Stop a product that causes significant burning, swelling, blistering, or worsening irritation. Seek qualified medical care for persistent symptoms despite gentler care, painful cracks, bleeding, open sores, a spreading rash, or possible infection. A shower checklist is not a treatment plan.
Make the reset pleasant without adding more products
Have a clean towel ready, keep the bathroom comfortable, and choose music or a podcast if you enjoy it. Those small details can make the occasion feel deliberate without making your skin work harder.
Next time, start by selecting your reset job and leave the unnecessary extras out. On ordinary days, return to the simple everyday shower order.
